I'm posting this Daily Devotional to get opinions on the content, and the interpretation of the verses.    I am NOT posting because I particularly am in agreement with the authors' take on these verses, so if you disagree with anything here, you are not particularly finding disageement with me.

This is written by Pastor Joseph Prince, in Singapoe, and is a good example of his teachings and beliefs. You can get a good feeling for "Prosperity Thinking" here, although Pastor Prince would not call it that. He calls it the "The Grace Revolution." Note: In the Scriptural quote, he just had Vs. 17, where I included 16-18 to get reference by.

THE HEAD AND BODY ARE ONE

God’s Word says that Christ is the head and we the church are His body. So Christ and the church are one. Christ and you are one! You cannot say that God sees Christ the head perfect but His body imperfect. Or that Christ is accepted but His body not accepted. The measure of Jesus’ acceptance with God is the measure of your acceptance with God!

So it makes no sense to say that the head is well but the body sick, that the head is rich but the body in lack, or that the head is at rest but the body full of stress. My friend, what Jesus is before God, you His body are. As He is, so are you in this world! (1 John 4:16-18)

"And we have come to know, and have believed the love which God has for us. God is Love, and the one who abides in love, abides in God, and God abides in Him. (17) By this, Love is perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the day of Judgement: as He is, so also are we in this world. (18) There is no Fearing Love; but perfect Love casts out all fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in Love."

Today, God wants you to lay claim on Christ being your head. Start believing that all His perfections, and the delight and joy that He brings to the Father’s heart, He has set to your account. And you will begin to realize that as Jesus is a sweet-smelling aroma to the Father, so are you!

The more you begin to see that you are one with Christ, the more you will realize that whatever you need right now, He is dispensing to you. If you are sick in your body, Christ your head imparts His health and healing to you. If you lack wisdom, Christ your head freely imparts His wisdom to you. If you have any lack, Christ your head gives you His exceeding riches.

Beloved, have this rich revelation that Christ and you are one. You can never be separated from Christ your head from whom comes all the supply for your body—all the power, wisdom, provision and health. So declare, “As He is, so am I in this world!”

Pastor Joseph Prince

So, what did you think of this Devotional? Make sense? Not? Well, after all the converrsations about "Prosperity Thinking" I thought it beneficial to actually see some, that we (generally) disprove of so intensely. Please construct your comments around this theme.

  • Genesis 3:17-19:

    (17) and unto ADAM he said, BECAUSE thou hast hearkened UNTO the voice of thy WIFE (allowed her to entice to join), and hast EATEN of the tree, of which I COMMANDED thee, saying, thou shalt NOT eat of it: CURSED is the ground for thy sake; in SORROW shalt thou eat of it ALL the days of thy life; (18) THORNS also and THISTLES shall it BRING forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; (19) in the SWEAT of thy face shalt thou eat BREAD, till thou RETURN unto the ground; for OUT of it wast thou TAKEN: for DUST thou art, and UNTO dust shalt thou RETURN.( all flesh is sin as all flesh dies)

Adam’s curse is work-oriented: man, will struggle to work the land (labor to eat) and will be much consumed providing for his family this is seen in men today. this greatly leads to the breakdown of the body, and to death. not known by Adam prior to the fall. (all flesh is sin as all flesh dies)

  • Prince's supposed argument about the relationship between the body and the head is totally flawed, what we would call 'Flawed Logic'.  We need to take each person as a whole and the Father as a whole, not as a separated body part.  If we take the idea of a school, the headmaster, is indeed the head of a school, whose job is to 'teach' the body of the school which is educationally deficient, whilst the head has the knowledge.  If we apply this to God being the head, it is true that either one cannot exist without the other, however most of the body exists to support the brain, to carry, feed, and do the will of the brain.

This then is our relationship with God through Jesus, we 'serve' God just as the body serves the brain, but as followers of Christ we also serve the other parts of the body, not just self, as Prince says "If you have any lack, Christ your head gives you His exceeding riches."  making it sound like material riches.  Certainly God supplies my need, to my embarrassment in His goodness, but He provides my needs not my every want.   In my opinion the passage posted shows a distinct distortion of the scripture.  Flawed logic.

    • Just as a after-thought, the way Prince writes certain statements, he makes them sound like scripture, an example is the line that I quoted above, "If you have any lack, Christ your head gives you His exceeding riches." Sounds scriptural, but is not!  This is a principle (or tool) that many of the Prosperity Gospel fraternity use.

      • Yes, he'll even put up a saying right after a Scripture quote, and have it be not Scripture but it's treated as such. I dislike that rather intensly. If he would wake up, and give himself a time of Repentive humbling before God, with Jesus. He's a very good Pastor for preaching. He can do an Altar Call with the best, not quite Billy Graham (boy could he preach!) but very persuasive and good.

        • He may be a good preacher but if the vine is sick it will not produce fruit.  Like others who preach the prosperity gospel, they are great speakers and so believable because what they say sounds right, but is a lie.  When you put riches at the centre of your faith you remove God from that place.  When we take this thinking on board, that the body and the head are equal, become like Lucifer, and we rebel against God because no one humans or angels are, or can be, equal with God.  The creation cannot be superior to the creator.

          • People like so many televangelists preach what the ears want to hear; they speak of a God that man wants as his God. They do not preach of our God as revealed to us in his word, amen. Man does not want truth lest it benefits him by nature, and the feel good preachers give man the God who gives him what he wants, amen. It fills the pews and the tithes. Beware of the tickling the ears preachers, amen. God bless!

  • It appears to me that Mr. Prince has, in one fell swoop, committed several egregious blunders. Let us recall that in Gen. 1:26, God said "let us make man in our image...". With his anthromorphisization, Prince manages to "make God in our image", and endues Him with all of the natural self-serving characteristics that beset man.
Prince also manages, rather neatly, to ignore the real meaning of "head" as used in this and other scriptures. What about  1Co 11:3 "But I would have you know, that the head of every  man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God."  Or Eph 5:23 "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body."  And then there's Col 1:18 "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence".
Context and usage clearly establishes that the meaning and intent of "head" is one of leadership, not one of biological connection.
Now I have no doubt whatsoever that God, when He looks at the body (the church), does NOT see us frail members of that body...He sees ONLY His Son, for it is in Him that we are made perfect. Equally, I have no doubt that when Jesus looks at His body (the church), He sees the lack of perfection that He himself has attained, because He knows full well that we have NOT yet put on incorruption or perfection...and HE loves us even so.
Final thought, and question...if, as Mr. Prince preaches in this devotional, the head dispenses health, healing, wisdom and riches so readily, then why do we have sickness, idiocy and the poor (who will ALWAYS be with us, according to Jesus)?
I understand what Mr. Prince is trying to do, and that is to awaken in Christians a greater appreciation and understanding of who we are IN Christ...however, his methodology in imparting that wisdom is very misleading. I, for one, have not yet had the "twinkling of an eye", or heard the last trump, and I certainly haven't yet put on incorruption or immortality (as Jesus has). But I'm looking forward to it!!!

BTW....I've intentionally left out any arguments based around Prince's logical fallacies.

    • Many leave out the parts of receiving all the blessings God has to offer by not addressing that faith and obedience are needed, and that all is always done according to Gods will and purpose; not mans, amen. God bless in all things, amen.
